Tambopata is a part of the Madre de Dios province. Puerto Maldonado serves as a gateway to the national park. The Tambopata Amazon Peru tour can be started either from Lima, Cusco or Puerto Maldonado itself.

We will be assisting you from the moment you arrive till the end of the tour. You will learn a lot about the flora and fauna of Tambopata National Park.

Tambopata is home to macaw clay licks and stunning Oxbow lakes. The clay lick in Tambopata Nature Reserve is the largest in the world. Infact, it’s less than 500 metres from the renowned Tambopata Research Center.

Itinerary

Day 1Puerto Maldonado - Tambopata - Posadas Amazonas Lodge

We will be picking you up from Puerto Maldonado Airport and will drive you to our office in the city. Here you can leave your bags and carry just what is needed for the four days. After securing your belongings, our guide will give you an introduction to the Amazon Rainforest.

We will then drive you for 20 kilometres (12.42 miles) to the boat pier in Port Tambopata. Here we will be embarking on a two and a half hours boat ride on Madre de Dios river deep into the native community of Inferno where you will be spending the night in Posada Amazon Lodge.

Before entering the community, we will be stopping at the Tambopata National Reserve’s checkpoint and within the buffer zone.

Upon arrival, the hostel manager will welcome you and give you important recommendations for your stay.

We will begin the tour with a visit to the 30 metres high Canopy Tower. It is a 20 minute walk from the Posada Amazon Lodge. You will be walking up through spiral steps. From the top of the tower, you will get a spectacular view of the large expanses of standing forest cut by the Tambopata River winding through the center.

You will also get to see distinct species from time to time, toucans, parrots or macaws are seen flying against the horizon, or mixed canopy flocks land in the tree canopy next to you.

Ecotourism Conference; A daily presentation at the Infierno ecotourism project is available nightly from a staff member.

  • Accommodation: Posada Amazonas hostel
  • Food: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 2Tres Chimbadas lake - Ethnobotanical Information

After relishing a local breakfast, we will be visiting Tres Chimbas lake. It is 30 minutes by boat. You can also reach by walking for some 45 minutes from the lodge. Once there, you can paddle across the lake on a catamaran.

Here you will be able to spot the family of nine giant river otters. You will also get to see other lake fauna such as alligators, hoatzin, and screaming horns. Otters are most active from sunrise to eight or nine PM.

We will then embark on a twenty minute boat ride down stream to the Ethnobotanical Information. It is designed by the Centro Ñape staff.

Centro Ñape is a community organization that produces medicines from forest plants and administers them to patients who choose its small clinic. They have produced a trail that explains the different drugs (and other) uses of the selected plants.

Later that night after dinner in Posadas Amazonas Lodge, we will be doing a short night walk. You will be able to spot some nocturnal creatures. It will be easier to spot frogs and otters.

  • Accommodation: Posada Amazonas hostel
  • Food: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 3Parrot Clay Lick - Ceiba Trail Hike - Visit to a local farm

We will be leaving the lodge early in the morning and will embark on a twenty minutes boat ride to see the Parrot Clay Lick. Here you will be able to see dozens of brightly colored parrots and parakeets.

Every morning they fly to the cliff to eat the clay. The clay here helps them to flush out any toxins they may have eaten.

Often species such as Mealy and Yellow-headed Amazon, Dark Blue-headed Parrot and Parakeet headed are easy to spot here. The clay lick takes place from early in the morning to midday day. However the best time to visit the clay lick is early in the morning when most birds flock in.

After relishing an Amazonian breakfast at Posadas Amazon, we will embark on a two hour hike on the Ceiba Trail. The trail is named after the giant tree found here – Ceiba Tree. During the trail, our guide will be explaining the history of the jungle and will introduce you to different flora and fauna.

Later in the evening, after lunch, we will be visiting a local farm. It is a thirty minute boat ride from the hotel. The owner here grows a wide variety of popular and unknown Amazon crops. In his garden, almost every plant and tree serves a purpose.
