Incredible Hike to Choquequirao “sister of Machu Picchu”
Choquequirao is very different from Machu Picchu. Choquequirao sits on the saddle of a high Andean mountain range (3033m / 9948ft) above sea level and 1500m / 4920ft above the roaring waters of the Apurímac River.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco, Cachora / Chiquisca

Pick up from the hotel at 5:00 am and transfer in our private transport to Cachora (2850m / 9348ft), the trip will last around 4 hours. While the group is having breakfast the crew will take care of the horses for the trek. We started walking from Cachora to observe the majestic snow covered Padrayoc peak, the highest (5482m / 17980ft). The walk on this first day is 16 km around 6 hours start walking on the flat part. From the point of view of Capuliyoc where you could see condors, the descent towards the Apurímac Canyon, and the changes in the vegetation from Agave and Tunacactus to dwarf tree forest, having lunch in Cocamasana, then we continue to Chiquisqa (1950m / 6398ft), camp in Chiquisca

Day 2Chiquisca / Choquequirao Archaeological Complex

Breakfast; Early in the morning we start walking from here and continue the descent to the mighty Apurímac River (1550m / 5028ft) in the impressive deep canyon of the same name. After a short rest, continue the walk up to Choquequirao Archaeological Complex. The first 2-3 hours are up steep up to Santa Rosa, then you will change between flat and climb the rest of the way surrounded by beautiful vegetation with various varieties of orchids. Lunch in Maranpata (2850m / 9348ft) then continue to Choquequirao (3033m / 9948ft), after 2 hours walking arrival at our campsite from where we have a spectacular view of the canyon, it is also possible to see Andean condors soaring in the mountains. Day 3Explore Choquequirao

Breakfast; this day enjoying a complete guided tour of the Choquequirao complex means “cradle of gold” visiting the upper parts (Hanan), and the lower parts (Urin), and some areas that are still covered in wild foliage and ready to be restored in how it was when the Incas had it. The steep mountainside below the main plaza features several newly discovered clusters of buildings, including the so-called Ridge Group, and the Cascade Temple, an intriguing ceremonial complex facing the cascades of a steep ravine.

Day 4 Choquequirao / San Ignacio / Carmen Huerto

Breakfast; we began to walk on very different routes than those we walked before. Passing through this new pass that we will have impressive views, for example in the Apurímac canyon, in its’ greater length, and a great amount of flora and fauna. We will go through a height difference of 1500m / 4920ft between Choquequirao and Playa San Ignacio (1500m / 4950ft). Lunch in San Ignacio, after lunch we ascend to our camp in a paradisiacal place, known as Carmen Huerto (2000m / 6560)

Day 5Carmen Huerto / Huanipaca / Return to Cusco

Breakfast; After early breakfast, hiking out of the Apurímac Canyon, with the river receding to a distant white ribbon below the visitors and the glaciers of the Vilcabamba Mountain Range that fill the sky ahead. On the route we will visit communities such as Pacobamba and Huanipaca (3150m / 10332ft). From Huanipaca we will have the most impressive view of the ‘Acsarayoc’ glacier chain, located in the Vilcabamba region “the last refuge of the Incas”, our walk will end in Huanicapa, where our private transport will be waiting to take us and back to Cusco
