Tour Details

Huchuy Qosqo Peru Trek is a lesser known trek to Machu Picchu from Cusco. This is the shortest trek to Machu Picchu. The archaeological complex of Huchuy Qosqo Cusco played an important role during the rule of the Inca empire.

History of Huchuy Qosqo:

Earlier it was called Kakya Qawani, in the 20th century it was named Huchuy Qosqo.

Huchuy Qosqo in Quechua means Little Cusco. It was built as a royal estate by the eighth Inca emperor Viracocha. The Incas did not practise the tax system, instead they imposed something called Mitma. Under this system they controlled the land and labour.

This helped the Inca rulers to acquire more lands and pass down in the line of succession. Later during his rule, Emperor Viracocha faced a revolt from the Cancha people. Fearing his life, he took asylum in Huchuy Qosqo and handed the throne to his son, Pachacutec.

Pachacutec in turn put down the revolt and dethroned his father and became the new Inca emperor. Huchuy Qosqo Peru saw rapid development under Pachacutec’s rule.

The Inca site nestles on a hilltop overlooking the Sacred Valley of Incas. The trek is less popular as compared to Inca Trail and Salkantay Trek. Because of this, it is less crowded and you will mostly have the sites to yourself.

Huchuy Qosqo Trek also gives you an insight to the life of the Andean community living in the high altitude villages. They have preserved their customs and traditions and continue to converse in Quechua.

You will also get to see many Andean Camelids – Llamas and Alpacas.

This is a high altitude trek. It is highly recommended that you spend a few days in Cusco before the trek to avoid altitude sickness.

When to hike Huhcuy Qosqo?

Huchuy Qosqo is a part of the Peruvian Andes. It is subject to two seasons – dry season and rainy season. It is best to experience this three day trip during the dry season – between March and November.
