Laguna Humatay or Lake Humantay is a high altitude turquoise lake nestled in the Peruvian Andes at 4,200 meters (13779 feet) above sea level. Humantay Lake Tour is a popular day trip from Cusco, just as the Rainbow Mountain.
The turquoise lake is a popular stop in the iconic Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. Humantay Lagoon is sacred to the Andean community. Infact, locals have been worshipping the lake since Inca civilization.
Even today, they practice a traditional ritual called Apacheta while visiting Humantay Lake. It is a process of piling stones, each on top of the other as a gesture to thank the Pachamama or Mother Earth. They also use coca leaves which is sacred too.
Lake Humantay is truly a hidden gem. It is a glacier lake. It flows on the foothills of the Snow Capped mountain of Humantay. Melting glaciers from the mountain feed the lake, after which it gets its name.
Laguna Humantay can only be reached by hiking for 1.5 hours from Soraypampa. It is mostly an uphill hike. If you are not willing to hike, you can rent a horse from the local community.
Please note, this is a high altitude trek. We highly recommend you to spend 3-4 days in the City of Cusco before the trek to avoid altitude sickness. We operate this full day tour both in small group and as a private tour.
