Excursion to the Inca agricultural experimental center of Moray, famous for its sunken amphitheater, formed by four circular platforms that seem to disappear into the earth like an artificial crater. The site was apparently an Inca agricultural research station designed to experiment with crops at various altitudes (some of which run down to depths of 100 meters). The terraces, built on retaining walls filled with fertile soil and watered by complex irrigation systems, are believed to allow the Incas to grow more than 250 species of plants.
We arrive at the circular Inca ruins of Moray, where we enjoy a delicious picnic lunch.
After this very atmospheric mule trails place then takes us to the ancient city of Maras with its prominent Spanish door arches and extensive church. Maras is famous for its spies – due to its strategic location above the Sacred Valley. Then we descend towards the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the salt flats of Salineras. Here more than 5000 terraces are still in production and many families from Maras bring their salt to the Urubamba market on mules. Finally we meet our new vehicle next to the Urubamba River for the return trip to Cusco.
