This incredible hike runs below Salcantay Mountain (6271m / 20569ft) where massive snow capped mountains collide with lush tropical forests, passing Quechua communities and lesser known Inca ruins, finally reaching Aguas Calientes on the third day. . This itinerary is an interesting alternative for those who do not have spaces that are on the Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu. Salcantay Mountain is the highest peak in the Cordillera de Vilcabamba, part of the Peruvian Andes.

Itinerary

Day 1 Transportation to Mollepata - Marcoccasa

Pick up at the hotel at 6:00 in the morning, a bus trip of approximately 3 hours takes us in the morning to the town of Mollepata, where we meet our muleteers. From here we begin to gently climb country lanes, through the locals’ crops towards Marcoccasa (3,450m / 11,400ft). After lunch we continue an hour’s hike uphill to our first campsite at Marcoccasa (3,500m / 11,550ft) from where we have fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Cabins

Day 2 Marcoccasa - Salkantaypampa

Breakfast; After breakfast the ascent road to the Pakiswaraka Ridge (3,665 / 12,100 feet), we continue on an easy path towards the water channel built by the community. From this point you can enjoy beautiful views of the valley and towards the majestic Mount Humantay. We continue on a nice flat road along the canal in the valley until lunchtime. In the afternoon we have another 1-2 hours of gentle climb to our campsite at Salkantaypampa (3,900m / 12,900ft) just below Apu Salkantay, offering stunning views of this spectacular mountain (prepare for a cold night). Day 3Salkantaypampa - Collpapampa

Breakfast; We begin a 2 and a half hour ascent; we reach the highest point of the Huayracmachay Pass trek (4525m / 14846ft). From this point, we begin to descend towards the so-called cloud forest. After descending to the cloud forest along the route, you can see the remains of an ancient Inca trail, a long easy descent along the Salcantay River; Lunch in Huayracmachay (3850m / 12628ft) arriving late to our second camp in Collpapampa (2890m / 9479ft), a beautiful place with some hot springs to relax. camping

Day 4Collpapampa - Lucmabamba

Breakfast; We will continue our walk with a fast downhill walk along the Sta. Teresa river, enjoying the increasingly abundant vegetation, passing through waterfalls, passion fruit and coffee plantations. The arid highland landscape begins to transform into a cloud forest full of trees and bromeliads. Following the Santa Teresa river, we will pass the waterfalls in Coripacchi, the settlement in Wiñaypoko then pass La Playa where we will have our lunch and finally we arrive at Lucmabamba (2100m / 6888ft). Day 5Lucmabamba - Llactapata - Aguas Calientes

Breakfast, walk to Llactapata (2650m / 8692ft) on the way we can see banana, coffee and avocado plantations. We enter Andean-bear territory and that will probably accompany flocks of parrots. Begin to climb for 2-3 hours up to Q’elloqasa Pass (2860m / 9381ft) from where we have an exceptional view of Machu Picchu, Salcantay and Llaqtapata archaeological site, which have been recently restored; Descent towards the Aobamba River crossing lush bamboo forests and more orchards takes us to the hydroelectric plant (lunch) from where we board a train that will take us to Aguas Calientes (40 minutes by train).

Day 6Full Day Machu Picchu and return to Cusco

Breakfast at the hotel; Full day excursion to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes, early transfer at 5:30 am to the bus stop for the short trip (25 minutes) to the citadel of Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, you will participate in a guided tour of the Citadel, visiting the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Solar Clock (the most important preserved Intihuatana), the royal rooms, the Temple of the Three Windows, houses, warehouses, a large central square; and all connected by narrow roads and passes that are surrounded by terraces carved into the mountainside. After the tour you will have time to wander around the archaeological site at your leisure.
Then, you will have time to do any of the following activities by yourself (not included in the price):
1. 1. Ascent to Wayna Picchu; For the more adventurous, we suggest you climb the Wayna Picchu from where you can appreciate the immensity of Machu Picchu, being even more surprisingly high and distant.
Buffet lunch at the Lodge Restaurant Sanctuary of Machu Picchu
Train back to Cusco: In the afternoon you will return to the Aguas Calientes train station for the return trip to Cusco – departure of the train to Cusco; upon arrival at the reception and transfer to the Hotel Cusco
